So I am in the process of putting together a new demo for my VJing and I wanted to throw a question out to this tribe.

I have a bunch of friends music that I plan on using for the demo, but have some tracks that I don't have permission to use that I would like to. As I am not selling the demo, just giving it to people do you think that this is an issue?

Technically, Yes. It could be a problem if your friend records for a commercial label or is selling his music via a 3rd party agent. You need to get permission from your friend and the party that holds the licensing.

One other thing. If you are sending a demo reel out to attract business or an independent job then it is considered marketing materials and as such you must have permission to use all music that will appear with the work.

But people do it all the time. As long as it isn't going to be shown publicly for ANY reason or go to some one that might show it publicly you should be OK.

    Just my 2c.
